IMの診断に異型リンパ球が役に立ったという報告
1921年にMcKinlayが血液形態学のパイオニア的存在だったDowneyに白血病が疑われる学生さんの血液スメアを見せてみると、Downeyがそうじゃないと考え、最終的にはIMの診断に至った。
1923年にMcKinlayとDowneyが異型リンパ球をDowney cellとして発表。
